boundaries

Q: What are some boundaries that people can set when supporting a friend struggling with addiction?

A: Offer him only socks, underwear and food.

He can get clothing for free at a homeless shelter.

Never offer money/shelter, or you’ll never get him out of your house, and he’ll only use your money to get more of whatever he is addicted to.

No matter what he says, addicts always lie.

Once he hits rock bottom, help him get help from an addiction recovery sponsor because, unlike a sponsor, you know absolutely nothing about how to defeat relapse.

This is the kindest thing you can do. Anything more and you are enabling his addiction, thereby prolonging his misery.
