Q: Do you know any doctors that will see you while you are in active addiction?

A: If you can afford one, any general practitioner will see you while you are in active addiction, particularly if you are have physical health issues.

However, since addiction = “severe substance use disorder” = technically, a mental health problem, a clinical psychologist (if you can afford one) is the best sort of mental health therapist to see when you are ready to understand the underlying problems the caused your addiction.

If someone suggested that you are a drug/alcohol addict (alcoholic) and you are unsure, or don’t agree, or think they’re crazy, or think they’re wrong, or you just don’t want to hear about it, then you need to seek a diagnosis from a mental health professional with Board Certification in either Addiction Psychiatry from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or Addiction Medicine from the American Board of Preventive Medicine (if you can afford one).
