rock bottom?

Q: Is it necessary to hit rock bottom in order to go to an Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meeting?

A: No. Not at all.

Although A.A./NA membership is for anyone who has a desire to stop drinking/using, anyone can attend an A.A./NA 12-step meeting if they are just curious to see what all the fuss is about.

A.A./NA meetings are always 1 hour long. Just show up and sit and listen. No one will give you a second look. You don’t even need to put a dollar or 2 in the hat when it’s passed around if you don’t have a dollar or 2 to spare. No one will give you a second look.

Closed meetings are reserved exclusively for people who have a desire to stop drinking—i.e., no friends or family allowed. I have attended thousands of A.A./NA meetings. Only one of those meetings was a closed meeting. As far as I know, closed A.A./NA meetings are a remnant of some sort of past tradition—possibly involving sacrificial chickens, lots of candles or some other strange shit.

AND THAT’S THE TRUTH
