wash the dishes

Q: I got clean and sober. Now what do I do?

A: Wash the dishes.

The only thing I got from
my 60 days in
Old Rehab
was a
clear head

and
the realization
that
I had just wasted
11,130 days
either
drunk
high
or
hungover

I realized
after completing my time
in Old Rehab

that I had
just wasted decades

either
worrying about
the stupid things
that
I was ashamed
I had done
in the past

or

worrying about
what’s coming tomorrow

At the end
of my long addiction run
it seems
I wasted an
especially large
amount of time
worrying today about

whether or not
I was gonna
have enough money
tomorrow
to buy drugs

With my head clear
for the first time
in just about forever

I realized
during my time in
Old Rehab
that
I had not been
living my own life

And that pissed me off!

I left Old Rehab with
a powerful
desire to
find something better
to do
than drugs

Living in the moment
became
my new obsession
in life

Living in the moment
became my
new drug

My new obsession
with
living in the moment

replaced

my old obsession
with
using drugs

And it worked!

When I felt myself
slipping into
the old habit of

worrying about
yesterday

or

worrying about
tomorrow

I taught myself to

snap back
into
living in the moment

And it worked!

The Buddhist master
Thich Nhat Hanh
explains

living in the moment
in his book
The Miracle of Mindfulness

“While washing the dishes
one should only be
washing the dishes

which means that while
washing the dishes

one should be
completely aware of

the fact that one is
washing the dishes”

Why?

If we are
focused on

the guilt and shame
of our past

or

worrying about
what tomorrow
will bring

“we are not alive
during the time we are
washing the dishes”

AND
SOMETIMES IT’S FUN TO
WASH THE DISHES
WITH A FRIEND

WHEN TWO PEOPLE
TANGO
IT’S A BEAUTIFUL THING!
