what is addiction?
Q: Are there any legal substances more addictive than nicotine?
A: There is no such thing as one substance being more addictive than another.
Addiction is like an on/off switch. Humans either become addicted to something, or we don’t, and humans can become addicted to almost anything.
Your question suggests that you have confused addiction with relapse.
Addiction is genetic; relapse is epigenetic.
Addiction is caused by a genetic mutation that resulted in the ΔFosB (DeltaFosB) splice variant of the FOSB member of the human FOS gene.
That unfortunate genetic mutation occurred at one point during human (or, perhaps, earlier?) evolution.
After humans become addicted to something, the continued abuse of whatever it is that we are addicted to causes a permanent epigenetic mutation that happens inside every single cell in our bodies.
That epigenetic mutation causes the cravings to abuse whatever it is that an addict is addicted to, and it’s those cravings that eventually result in relapse.
Nicotine cravings are exceptionally strong. That’s why nicotine relapse is so common, and why it normally happens within about an hour after a nicotine addict tries to stop smoking cigarettes.
Of course, addiction is only a symptom of a deeper cause, which is typically unresolved physical and/or emotional (usually childhood) trauma.
AND THAT’S THE TRUTH
